4 Quick Tips for Posting Ads in Craigslist & Backpage

With many people in the online marketing arena using Facebook and other forms of social media as their primary place for advertising their business, I’ve gotten questions from people asking if posting their business opportunities in online classified ad sites, specifically in Craigslist and Backpage, will work in generating traffic to their website. My answer is of course you can get traffic in both those online classified sites.

But in the case of Craigslist, it’s really tricky getting your ad on it, unlike a few years ago before they started “ghosting” ads (making them invisible to readers).

CL (Craigslist) is sensitive to your IP address and will limit you to posting in your city or neighboring cities. You’re also limited to using website links in certain sections as well as using HTML. Sometimes it’ll look like you’ve posted your ad successfully and then you’ll find that it’s been “ghosted” by Craigslist.

The best way to getting around it in Craigslist is to post in your city, use an eye-catching subject line and use text in the ad. Since you’re limited to using a website, you may have to disguise the URL…

“Please visit my site at:   www . mybigonlineprofits . com  (Please enter into your web browser without the spaces)”

Even though sometimes that works, it looks terribly amateurish.

The best way to drive people to your website on Craigslist without listing your website is to instead provide a phone number with a pre-recorded message for your prospects to call.

On your pre-recorded message you can provide a short message about the opportunity and give your website URL there. You can get a free voice mail from Google if you have a Google email address. https://www.google.com/voice. Or you can use a resource like Freedom Voice when you need to leave a longer message so that you can sift through getting the right prospects to respond.

Backpage Classified Ads

I also get results from posting ads on Backpage. The best way to get responses is to post on peak times of the day when it will be seen. Usually I get the best results between 6am – 9am and 7pm – 9pm of whatever cities time zone I post in.

Like a lot of free traffic methods, backpage does take work. Yes Backpage is a great place to get free traffic, but you need to spend some time on it, and to know how to use it the right way, otherwise it will be an epic waste of time.

To increase the chances of getting website traffic from Backpage, it’s best that you:

1) Write a Killer Ad – In order to get the maximum amount of clicks to your website. You should also include a graphic in the ad. The best way to do this is to look at other craigslist ads, see which ones catch your eye and then model you ad based on them. Make sure you provide a link to your website at least 2 times in the Ad.

2) Don’t Overhype – Make sure you are not overhyping or promising unrealistic claims. Backpage has become rather strict on this kind of thing nowadays, so it is essential that you are promising realistic results to your clients. Again look at other Backpage ads and model your ad on the ones you like. Be professional with your presentation.

3) Post to at Least 5 Major Cities – Not only post in the small business or business opportunity sections but also in niche specific sections. For instance, if your opportunity is in the weight loss niche, post your ads in both the biz ops and health and beauty section. This would give your ad more exposure. Post your ad in the 5 biggest US cities to get US traffic only. If you have the time to do more posting, you can additionally post to several other small cities and towns.

4) Don’t Spam – Backpage is becoming tougher and tougher these days to get your ad listed so make sure you follow their rules and guidelines. A year ago I post multiple ads to 10 different cities and because I failed to read some of their guidelines all my ads got removed with my account terminated. Make sure you read their rules and guidelines so that you don’t get into any trouble.

As I said before, Backpage is a great source of free traffic, but you need to put in a lot of work (posting everyday), and you also need to make sure that your ad is good and professional looking.

Avoid your Backpage ad from getting “ghosted”. Craigslist isn’t the only one ghosting ads they don’t like, Backpage has started doing it too. The reason why BackPage is ghosting people’s ads is because they are posting hundreds of ads to the same email address. You can spin your ad headlines and ad body text but if you don’t spin the emails as well then your ads will get ghosted for sure.
