How to Market on Twitter

Over the last few years, the popularity for growing your home-based business using social media has exploded.

Facebook and Twitter are at the top of the Social Media platforms to use for marketing with millions of users worldwide and growing everyday. Needless to say, learning how to use multiple platforms for marketing gives you the ability to spread a wider net for the purposes of growing your business.

This article is geared toward those who are wanting to expand their marketing to Twitter and how to do it so they can generate leads and get sign ups.

Twitter – The Basics

Like Facebook, you create an account, connect with others, and post content (Tweets). Your goal is to build yourself as a “brand” (see my article about Attraction Marketing) and make good quality connections with others to open the door to share what you’ve got. Now let’s move on to a closer look.

Your Account Profile

Put together an attractive account. Use good pictures of yourself and build a profile that is positive. Also in your description, share positive things about who you are and what you enjoy. You want to show yourself as the type of person that others would enjoy getting to know and do business with. Stay away from negative images/content and coming across as someone full of hype.

Start Building Your Network

When your goal is to generate leads for your home-based biz, it’s important to find the right type of people who would be open and responsive to your message. One of the best ways to do this is to utilize the Twitter Search Bar. Do searches on topics that are related to your message or your target market.

There are several search criteria to connect with the right people. Use your imagination. When you type in a word, phrase or keywords you are looking for, Twitter will give you literally thousands of results. You can easily customize the results filtering on your results.

Some basic ideas to do searches on:

  • Home-Based Business
  • MLM
  • Work at Home
  • Specific Names of MLM companies
  • MLM Lead Generation
  • Network Marketing Leaders

Do searches on categories related to people who have common interests:

  • Stay at home moms
  • Moms with young kids
  • Home-schooling parents
  • Stay at home dads
  • Frugal Living

If you’re marketing something that is health related, do searches related to the type of people who would be interested:

  • Athletic Lifestyle
  • Physical Fitness
  • Eating healthy
  • Overweight
  • Chronic illness

You get the idea. Try to brainstorm and come up with yoru own ideas. Once you find people in those searches you can start following them and also follow those who are following them.

Growing Your Network

When you follow others, you’ll be seeing their tweets. Those folks should reciprocate and follow you. Only then will they see your tweets. When you get a notification that you are being followed on Twitter, you want to send them a Direct Message. Remember, social media is all about connecting. Make sure that your personal message to your new followers invites them to connect with you on other social media platforms. Give them something of value so share with them a link to your blog (if you have one) which is a great way to send additional traffic to your blog. I wouldn’t send them a link to your business quite yet. I feel it’s best to make the most of your connection and build the relationship. Engage them on Direct Messages and keep conversations going. Sometimes they may miss your tweets but they’ll most likely see your Direct Messages.

Clean Up Your List

If after a week or so of following people, you see that they have not reciprocated by following you, go ahead and unfollow them so you can keep your list clean. Not everyone who follows you is interested in what you have. Some might actually be negative folks or have different motives for following you. Unfollow them.

What to Tweet (Post)?

Don’t tweet links leading directly to your business opportunity with a line stating “Want to be RICH NOW? Click Here: http://www.yourlink.com”. This smacks of a desperate amateur. You should position yourself as a professional in the industry. Set yourself apart from that crowd and provide value to the folks following you and work to grow your exposure and a bigger following. So it’s important to put some thought into what you’re posting because you want to have the best impact in your messages.

Tweet Things that are of High Value to Your Audience

Share things you’ve learned, ask questions, share links to relevant articles, books, websites, quotes, pictures, Youtube videos, marketing resources and blog articles (yours would be best). this helps you gain more followers and most likely your followers will be re-tweeting your posts. One of the things that I like to offer in my tweets are resources that anyone can use for their business, like a FREE Lead Generating System.

Re-tweet posts that you like from others. People love when you re-tweet their posts and it’s a great way to build rapport with your network.

Use hashtags in your tweets (#MlmLeads, #ResidualIncome, #NetworkMarketingSponsoring, etc.). If you don’t know what a hashtag is or how it works, here’s a great article explaining the basics.

Build Trust and Rapport

Posting a video of yourself sharing something of value helps build trust and rapport with people in your Twitter network. Rapport builds trust. Keep retweeting and mentioning them. Have casual conversations on Twitter.

Doing all of this right will take a little time but doing them will help you run a successful Twitter campaign that will give your brand exposure as a leader in your industry and will give you an audience for the message you want to share.

Consistency Is Important!

Consistent daily action produces the best results in the online market place, create a daily action plan and stay consistent for 90 days.

Use Automation

Whenever it’s possible, use automation to cut down on the time spent on repetitious tasks. One thing I recommend not to use is any automation that does direct responses to people who follow you. It’s best to connect personally and try to build a rapport before sharing your business. Here are some tools that are available to help you become a master Twitter marketer.

Tweepi

You could add hundreds of people to follow using a search criteria. You can also cleanup inactive follows, flush those who don’t follow back, and reciprocate someone else’s follow—all done in bulk and with a few clicks of your mouse.
